IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The map elucidates the plan of the Grange park when it was first opened in 1920 versus now.
Taking a general overview, the major change in the park's plan is the replacement of rose garden and pond to a cafe and children's paly area. In addition to that there is now an underground car parking available in the park nowadays.
It is pellucid that the fountain in the center of urban park has been replaced with a rose garden. There is seating arrangement all around the rose garden in the middle. In 1920, the stage for musicians was located in the western side, which has been substituted with an Amphitheatre for concerts. Furthermore, the rose garden in the south, now has been removed from the park. Thus, there were in total three rose gardens which now has been reduced to two.
Moving further, the rose garden and the pond located on the top of the park's map is been exchanged with a cafe an a children's play area in today's time. Moreover, the Glasshouse located in the south-east of the plan is completely removed from the urban park and is substituted with a water feature. The current plan of the park includes a underground car parking located around Eldon street. The two entrances in the north and south has remained the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the park's transformation well. You have identified key changes such as the addition of the cafe, children's play area, and car park, as well as the removal of the glasshouse. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the trends. However, there are some inaccuracies in the details; for instance, you mention the fountain was replaced by a rose garden, but the map shows the fountain remains in the center, while the rose garden is a new addition. Additionally, the description of the rose gardens is slightly confusing. Ensuring precise observation of the visual data is crucial for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on specific areas of the park. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'It is pellucid that', and 'Moving further' to guide the reader through the comparison. While the progression is generally logical, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is mostly effective, though the clarity of the spatial descriptions could be improved to better help the reader visualize the changes. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including words like 'elucidates', 'pellucid', 'substituted', and 'exchanged'. While these show an attempt to use sophisticated language, some choices are slightly unnatural or misused, such as 'pellucid' (which is rarely used in this context) and 'paly area' (a spelling error). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but there is room for more precise collocations when describing map changes. Focusing on natural usage rather than overly formal or obscure synonyms will improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the rose garden and the pond... is been exchanged' (subject-verb agreement and tense error) and 'the two entrances... has remained' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and spelling issues like 'paly area' and 'an a children's'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Increasing the accuracy of subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent tense usage will significantly enhance your writing.
