Student answer (Band 5.0)
These maps show Grange Park in 1920 and today. The park changed a lot.In 1920, there was a fountain in the middle. There was a big stage for musicians on the left. The park had many beautiful rose gardens and chairs. In the northeast, there was a pond for water plants. In the southeast, there was a glasshouse.Today, the park is very different. The fountain is now a small rose garden with chairs. The stage is now a big amphitheater for concerts. The pond is a children's play area now. There is also a new café near Arnold Avenue. The glasshouse is now a water feature. Finally, there is a new underground car park.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While you have identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and today, the analysis is quite brief and lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes. To improve, you should aim to group information more logically and provide a more detailed comparison of the transformations, ensuring you reach the required length to allow for a full development of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into a single paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of information. While the sequence of ideas is logical, there is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas together. The writing feels like a list of facts rather than a cohesive report. To improve, you should use paragraphing to separate the introduction, the main features of 1920, and the changes observed today. Additionally, incorporating linking words such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is functional but quite basic and repetitive. You rely heavily on simple structures like 'there was' and 'there is'. While the terms used to describe the park features (e.g., 'amphitheater', 'glasshouse', 'underground car park') are accurate, there is little attempt to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'replaced by', 'transformed into', or 'converted'. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns will help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammar is generally accurate, and your sentences are easy to understand. However, the range of structures is very limited. You rely almost exclusively on simple sentences. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate the ability to use complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice (e.g., 'The fountain, which was present in 1920, has been replaced by a rose garden'). Increasing the variety of your sentence patterns will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
