Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the conversion of the glasshouse and the expansion of the stage. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical comparison. For instance, the transition from the 1920 fountain to the current rose garden is mentioned, but the spatial relationships could be described with more precision. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the most significant transformations. While all parts of the task are addressed, the development of some points is slightly limited, preventing it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into two main paragraphs, which is appropriate for this task. There is a logical progression from the general overview to specific details. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the 1920 description and the present-day description could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel disconnected, such as the final sentence regarding the park being 'people friendly,' which lacks a clear link to the preceding details. Improved use of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'redevelopment' and 'amphitheater,' which are used correctly. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and minor errors, such as 'preset day' instead of 'present day' and 'foundation' instead of 'fountain.' These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better attention to spelling and collocation to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the fountain,' 'the glasshouse') and verb tense consistency ('Grange park consist of' instead of 'consisted of'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and spacing issues. While the student attempts complex structures, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from demonstrating the control required for a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy.
