Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day. However, the overview is somewhat weak, as it lists features rather than highlighting the most significant trends, such as the transition from a more natural, open space to a facility-heavy park. While the key changes (amphitheatre, cafe, car park) are mentioned, the description lacks precision in spatial referencing, making it difficult for the reader to visualize the layout. To improve, focus on grouping features logically and providing a more analytical summary of the transformation rather than just listing items.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the abrupt transition 'First of all' which does not fit the context of describing a map. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences is often disjointed. The punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas and periods, which disrupts the logical progression of the text. Improving the use of linking words like 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Words like 'features', 'changing', and 'alternation' are used frequently and sometimes incorrectly (e.g., 'alternation' instead of 'alterations'). There is a lack of precise vocabulary to describe map features, such as 'located', 'situated', 'adjacent to', or 'replaced'. Some word choices are awkward, such as 'less features in it'. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more specific terminology related to urban planning and map description, and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a Entrance', 'the pond'), incorrect verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement issues ('there are totally changing'). Punctuation is a significant issue, with many missing spaces after punctuation marks and incorrect capitalization (e.g., 'ARNOLD AVENUE'). While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of basic errors in grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for basic errors would be highly beneficial.
