IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided maps compare the layout and development of a public park when it first opened in 1920 till today.
Overall, it is apparent that the grange park underwent considerable transformation, with several new facilities being introduced and existing structures being modified.
In 1920, the grange park consisted of several features such as stage for musicians, pond for water plants, fountain, glasshouse, seats, three rose gardens, and two main entrances in the southern and northern area of a park. To the southeast, a glasshouse was built and a pond for water plants was located in the northeast. Additionally, a fountain was installed in the centre of a park and a stage for musicians was placed beside a fountain in the western area.
Today, significant changes have taken place. The former fountain has been replaced by a rose garden which is now surrounded by the seats and a stage for musicians which was located beside the fountain in the west has been superseded by an amphitheatre for concerts. Furthermore, a glasshouse has also been replaced by a novel water feature and several new amenities have been introduced such as cafe, children's play area, and an entrance for underground car park. Lastly, the rest two entrances remained at their previous positions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the park in 1920 and the present day. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the replacement of the fountain and glasshouse, and the addition of new facilities like the amphitheatre and cafe. The overview is clear and highlights the general trend of transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the 'rest two entrances' remained, but it would be more accurate to specify their location or note that they are the only original features retained. Overall, the information is well-selected and the report is accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'Additionally', 'Today', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is smooth. The referencing is generally clear, though the phrase 'the rest two entrances' is slightly awkward; 'the two remaining entrances' would be more natural. The structure is coherent throughout, and the information is presented in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'considerable transformation', 'superseded', 'amenities', and 'novel water feature'. There is an awareness of style appropriate for a report. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'rest two entrances' instead of 'remaining two entrances' and 'in the southern and northern area of a park' (should be 'areas'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively throughout the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The former fountain has been replaced by a rose garden which is now surrounded by the seats'. Grammar is generally well-controlled, and punctuation is used correctly. There are occasional errors, such as missing articles ('in the centre of a park' should be 'in the centre of the park') and slight awkwardness in phrasing. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of sentences are error-free, showing a good level of control over complex structures.
