IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two plans describe the layout of a public park (Garbage Park) when it was initially inaugurated in 1920 and its current design. Form an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the locations of two entrances and the rose garden in the north west have stayed intact while all the other things have completely been altered or removed.
Regarding the things that stayed constant, the two entrances in the northern and southern sides of the park have stayed as they were previously. Moreover, no change has been made to the semicircular rose garden in the north west.
On the contrary, many changes have also took place in the park. Firstly, the stage for musicians in the western side have been altered with an amphitheatre facing eastwards while the rose garden below it has also been removed. Additionally, all the four seats in the western side of the park are shifted towards centre of the park around a new rose garden where fountain was previously located.
The glasshouse in the eastern side has also been replaced by a water feature and the rose garden and pond for water plants have been altered by a cafe and children's play area, respectively. Also, the seats in that region are removed. Finally, an underground car parking has been added to the park that has an entrance from southeastern side of the park.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day. The overview is clear, and you have made effective comparisons between the two time periods. You covered all the significant changes, such as the addition of the amphitheatre, the relocation of the rose garden, and the introduction of the underground car park. The information is well-selected and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise terminology for all features, as some descriptions like 'all the other things' are slightly vague. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction followed by body paragraphs that group information by theme (features that remained constant versus those that changed). You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. The structure is logical and easy to follow, which is a key requirement for this band.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and plans, such as 'inaugurated', 'semicircular', 'amphitheatre', and 'water feature'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation or word choice, such as 'all the other things have completely been altered' (a bit informal) and 'many changes have also took place' (grammatical error affecting lexical precision). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly and with some flexibility. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'changed' or 'removed' to avoid repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that slightly detract from the quality of the writing, such as 'many changes have also took place' (should be 'have taken place') and 'the stage... have been altered' (subject-verb agreement error: 'stage' is singular). Additionally, 'all the four seats' is slightly unnatural; 'all four seats' would be better. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent tense usage when describing past and present states.
