Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the given two maps compare a grange park when it opened in 1920 and at present how it appears.
it can be clearly seen that, the park has been modernized significantly. while some original features such as rose garden and entrances have been remained. many facilities have been including a cafe and a children's play area. the park also now has an additional entrance.
in 1920, the park had three separate rose gardens, one at the top left, one at the top right, and one at the bottom left. a fountain was located in the center, with a large stage for musicians to the west of it. other features included a glasshouse on eldon street, a pond for water plants in the north-east corner, and seating distributed around the park.
at present, major changes have taken place. the stage has been replaced by a large amphitheatre for concerns, and the three rose gardens have been consolidated into one in the center. the fountain, glass house, and pond have all been removed. in their places, a cafe and children's play area have been built in the north-east, and a water feature added in the south-east. an underground car park entrance has also been on eldon street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all key features of the two maps. You have clearly identified the main changes, such as the removal of the glasshouse and pond, and the addition of the cafe and play area. The comparison between 1920 and the present is well-structured, and you have highlighted the significant modernization of the park. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide a more analytical overview in the introduction, perhaps by grouping the changes more distinctly (e.g., the shift from ornamental features to recreational facilities). Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear summary of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression from the general overview to specific details of the past and present. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the time periods. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'in 1920' and 'at present', to guide the reader. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated to avoid repetitive sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernized', 'consolidated', and 'amphitheatre' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'have been remained' (should be 'have remained') and 'for concerns' (likely a typo for 'concerts'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated in the north-east' or 'undergone significant transformation'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'many facilities have been including' (should be 'many facilities have been added, including') and 'an underground car park entrance has also been on eldon street' (missing a verb like 'been constructed'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct passive voice construction will significantly improve your accuracy.
