IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The map illustrates how Grange Park has developed from its initial opening in 1920 to its current design.

Overall, the park has undergone significant modernization and redevelopment. While the two original main access points have been preserved, central and surrounding features have been largely replaced with updated recreational facilities and an underground car park.

In 1920, the layout centered around a fountain. Today, this focal point has been replaced by a central rose garden surrounded by seats. To the west, the original stage for musicians and nearby rose garden have been converted into a larger amphitheater for concerts. The northwestern rose garden remains the only unchanged feature.

The eastern half has seen complete transformation. Along Arnold Avenue, a cafe's and a children's play area now occupy the space previously held by a rose garden and a water plant pond. Furthermore, the glasshouse in the southeast corner was replaced with a water feature, alongside a newly added entrance for an underground car park off Eldon Street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively summarizes the main changes in Grange Park. You have successfully identified the key transformations, such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden and the conversion of the stage into an amphitheater. The overview is clear and highlights the significant modernization of the park. You have also made relevant comparisons between the 1920 layout and the current design. All parts of the task are addressed, and the information is well-selected to provide a concise yet comprehensive summary of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by location (central/west and east). The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'While', 'Furthermore', and 'alongside' effectively to link sentences and clauses. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct areas of the park, which helps the reader follow the spatial changes easily. The flow of information is natural and coherent throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and changes, such as 'modernization', 'redevelopment', 'focal point', and 'transformation'. The use of precise terminology like 'amphitheater' and 'glasshouse' demonstrates a strong command of topic-specific language. There is one minor error with 'a cafe's', where the possessive 's' is unnecessary. However, this does not impede communication. Overall, the lexical range is flexible and precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('While the two original main access points have been preserved...') and passive voice constructions ('...have been replaced with...'). The grammar is generally accurate, with only minor slips like the unnecessary possessive in 'a cafe's'. Punctuation is handled well, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The control over complex structures is consistent, contributing to a professional and academic tone throughout the report.
