IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The two maps illustrate significant changes that have occurred in Grange Park, located off Arnold Avenue, between 1920 and the present day.

Overall it is crystal clear that, the park has been completely transformed from a simple, traditional layout into a modern recreational space with enhanced facilities for public use.

At a fleeting glance, there was a fountain at the centre of the park, surrounded by a pathway and seating areas on both the west and east sides. The western side also featured a stage for musicians, while rose gardens were situated near both entrances.

However, the central fountain has been replaced by a large rose garden encircled by benches. The stage on the west side has been removed and replaced with an Amphitheatre for concerts. On the eastern side, the former rose garden has made way for a cafe. Additionally, the area that once housed a glasshouse in the southeast corner has been redeveloped into a water feature, and a children’s play area now occupies the space north of it. A new entrance leading to an underground car park has also been introduced at the southeastern edge.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses the task by providing a clear overview of the changes in Grange Park. You have successfully identified the main features and made relevant comparisons between 1920 and the present day. The inclusion of specific details, such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden and the addition of the cafe and underground car park, demonstrates a good grasp of the visual data. The overview is concise and highlights the transformation well. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor features are integrated into the narrative flow rather than just listing them, though your current approach is already quite strong and covers all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The report is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that contrast the past and present states of the park. The use of cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Additionally,' and 'on the eastern side' helps guide the reader through the spatial changes effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial state from the subsequent developments. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is well-managed, making the information easy to follow and digest.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'recreational space,' 'enhanced facilities,' 'redeveloped,' and 'encircled' appropriately. The language is natural and precise, fitting the context of a report on map changes. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To move toward a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated or varied descriptive language for spatial relationships, but the current vocabulary is more than sufficient to convey the information clearly and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences that are generally error-free. Punctuation is used correctly, and the grammar is consistent throughout the response. There are no major errors that impede communication. The use of passive voice ('has been replaced,' 'has been removed') is appropriate for describing changes in a formal report. The majority of your sentences are accurate, and your control over tense usage—shifting between the past state and the present state—is handled with precision.
