Student answer (Band 7.0)
The layouts illustrate a public park's earlier infrastructure and current facilities. The plans depicts a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the public park has undergone significant modifications and renovations, resulting in the addition of many facilities, which has increased accessibility and functionality.
At a fleeting glance, in 1920, the northern part of Grand Park was connected to Arnold Avenue, and the southern part was connected to Eldon Street. The shape of the park was rectangular. A stunning fountain was located in the center. Additionally, the stage for musicians was situated to the left of the fountain, while on the right side, there was a pond as well as some seats for visitors. The glasshouse was located in the southeast corner near the south entrance.
Moving further, at present, the previous musicians stage has been demolished, and an amphitheater stands in its place. The central fountain has been replaced by a rose garden with some seating areas. The northern area has significantly changed; the rose garden and pond were replaced by a cafe and children's play area. The previous glasshouse and southeastern seats have been removed, and a water feature has been added. Furthermore, an underground car park entrance has been installed next to the water feature.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the key features of the park in 1920 and comparing them to the present day. You have successfully highlighted the major changes, such as the replacement of the stage with an amphitheater and the conversion of the central fountain into a rose garden. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the northern area changed significantly, but some details regarding the specific placement of the new cafe and play area could be more explicitly linked to the original layout to enhance the comparative aspect.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by two distinct body paragraphs covering the two time periods. Cohesive devices such as 'At a fleeting glance', 'Moving further', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the past and present states. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the ideas is easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more varied to avoid a mechanical feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'renovations', 'accessibility', and 'functionality' appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'amphitheater' and 'demolished', which adds precision to your description. While the word choice is generally accurate and natural, there are minor instances where phrasing could be more sophisticated. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly and with some style, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the control over punctuation is good. There are a few minor slips, such as 'The plans depicts' (subject-verb agreement error) in the introduction. However, these are rare and do not impede communication. You have successfully used passive voice constructions (e.g., 'has been demolished', 'has been added'), which is appropriate for describing changes in a process or layout. The grammatical control is strong throughout the text.
