The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The maps below represent the previous layout of a park when it was opened in 1920 and its current layout.
Overall, the park has been modernised with lots of new features and an extra entrance with an underground car park.
In 1920, the area had three rose gardens, which were reduced to only two at present. Today, one of the rose garden replaced the water fountain in the middle, surrounded by seating on all its sides. The stage for musicians in 1920 was replaced with a large open amphitheatre for concerts with several circular seating areas. The rose garden on the left side of the north entrance was replaced by a cafe. Although the fountain has been removed, a water feature has been added by the right side of the south entrance.
It was also observed that there was a pond for water plants in the far corner on the east side, where now been developed into a children's play area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons, such as the reduction in rose gardens and the replacement of the stage with an amphitheatre. However, the response misses some key details, such as the addition of the underground car park and the new entrance mentioned in your introduction, which are not fully elaborated upon in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that every feature mentioned in your overview is supported by specific details in the body paragraphs. Overall, the information is accurate and covers the key changes effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction and body paragraphs that follow a thematic approach. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although' and 'In 1920'. However, there are minor issues with cohesion; for example, the sentence 'where now been developed' is grammatically disjointed and lacks a clear subject, which disrupts the flow. Additionally, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details, which helps the reader follow the progression of changes over time.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernised', 'amphitheatre', and 'layout' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'one of the rose garden' (should be plural) and 'by the right side' (should be 'on'). While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language for spatial relationships and changes, such as 'transformed', 'converted', or 'situated', rather than relying on simpler verbs like 'replaced' or 'added'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that slightly impede the flow. For instance, 'one of the rose garden replaced' lacks subject-verb agreement, and 'where now been developed' is a fragment that lacks a proper verb structure. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every clause has a clear subject and a correctly conjugated verb.
