IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The two maps show how Grange Park has changed from 1920 to the present day.
Overall, the park has been considerably modernised. Several original features, including the stage for musicians, fountain, pond, greenhouse and some rose gardens, have been removed or replaced. In their place, new recreational and commercial facilities, such as an amphitheatre, café, children’s play area and water feature, have been introduced.
In 1920, the park had entrances on both Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street. A stage for musicians was located in the western part of the park, while a fountain stood near the centre. There were rose gardens in the north-west and south-west corners, and a pond for water plants occupied the north-eastern corner. A greenhouse was situated in the south-east. Seats were distributed around the park, particularly near the entrances and rose gardens.
Today, the stage has been replaced by a large amphitheatre for concerts in the west. The former fountain area has become a central rose garden surrounded by four groups of seats. The northern rose garden remains, although the southern one has disappeared. The pond in the north-east has also been removed and replaced by a children’s play area, while a café has been added nearby. In the south-east, the greenhouse has been replaced by a water feature. In addition, an underground car park has been constructed with an entrance on the eastern side of the park. The original entrances on Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street remain.
