IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This two map illustrate the significant changes that have taken place at Grange Park between 1920 and the present day. The several old features such as the stage of musucians, fountain, pond and glasshouse, have been remmoved and new facilities including a cafe, children’s play area, amphitheatre and water feature, have been added in mordern grange park.
There was a stage for musicians on the western side and a fountain was located in the center. There were rose gardens in the north-west, north-east and south-west and also a pond for water plants was in the north-east on top of seats. A glasshouse was in the south-east nearby entrance. The many seats were placed around the park.
In today the stage has been replaced by an amphitheatre for center and the fountain has been replaced by a rose gardern in the center. The old glasshose has been replaced by water feature in the south-east and glasshouse has been removed. Also the old pond for water plants has been replaced by cafe and children’s play area in the north-east. There is also an underground car park rntrance from eldon street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day, providing a clear overview of the transformation. You have highlighted key changes, such as the removal of the stage and fountain and the addition of the cafe and amphitheatre. However, the report could be improved by grouping the information more logically rather than listing features by location in the second paragraph. Additionally, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the glasshouse was removed, but the map shows a water feature now occupies that space. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into three paragraphs: an introduction, a description of the past, and a description of the present. While the progression is generally clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For example, the transition between the past and present could be smoother, and the use of referencing (e.g., 'the center') is occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the information flows in a way that is easy for the reader to follow, though more sophisticated linking words would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'amphitheatre', 'glasshouse', and 'facilities'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'musucians', 'remmoved', 'mordern', 'gardern', and 'glasshose'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede overall communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accuracy in spelling and attempt to use a wider variety of collocations to describe the changes, such as 'undergone a transformation' or 'replaced by a modern alternative'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'This two map illustrate' (should be 'These two maps illustrate') and 'In today the stage has been replaced' (should be 'Today, the stage has been replaced'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'for center' instead of 'in the center'. While these errors are frequent, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your score.
