Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the layout of a public park, known as Grange park, when it was opened in 1920 and the changes that has taken place in the park now.

Overall, the park has significantly changed now. In the major developments, a rose garden has been rearranged in the centre surrounded by seats, a stage for musician has been changed to an amphitheatre for concerts, a water feature has been added.

In detail, there was three rose garden in the past(two rose gardens in the north, in the left and in the right side of the entrance and a third one in the south, in the left side of the entrance) and seats were available in all fourth directions of the park. Now, the rose gardens have been rearranged in the centre of the park, surrounded by the seats, by removing a fountain from the middle. Moreover, a stage for musician in 1920 has been changed to an amphitheatre for concerts now. A new cafe has been added in the north side of the entrance by removing the rose garden. Beside the cafe, a children's play area has been introduced replaced by a pond for the water plants in 1920. A glasshouse in the right side of the south entrance has been removed and a water feature has been added there.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the two maps, effectively highlighting the major changes such as the rearrangement of the rose gardens, the conversion of the stage to an amphitheatre, and the addition of the cafe and water feature. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. However, the description of the 1920 layout is slightly confusing; for instance, stating there were 'three rose garden' and 'seats were available in all fourth directions' is imprecise. While the main features are identified, the spatial relationships could be described with more precision to fully meet the requirements of a Band 7 or higher. The response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized, moving from an introduction to an overview, and then into specific details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general summary from the detailed analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In detail', and 'Beside the cafe' are used to guide the reader through the changes. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing of locations (e.g., 'in the left and in the right side') is occasionally repetitive and clunky, which slightly impacts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'rearranged', 'amphitheatre', 'introduced', and 'transformed' used correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'stage for musician' (should be 'musicians') and 'all fourth directions' (should be 'all four directions'). The student attempts to use a range of descriptive language, but some phrasing is slightly unnatural. While the range is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the changes that has taken place', 'there was three rose garden') and incorrect prepositional usage. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the information presented. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but the control over these is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that plural nouns are correctly matched with their corresponding verbs and quantifiers.
