IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The plans illustrate a public park how it was looked in 1920 and the modifications done in the same park.
Overall, it can be seen that the major change is uderground car park. Furthermore, many park spots are modified such as seats location, stage for musicians. Futhermore, some features are replaced in which the glasshouse is converted to water feature and pound for water plants replaced with children's play area.
In 1920, the park had two entrances, one from the Arnold avenue and other from its opposite side from the Eldon street. Many seats and the rose gardens are located beside the outer borders of the park. The pound for water plants was situated in the upper right corner of the plan and the glasshouse was located near to the eldon street entrance. The center of park had a fountain and the west of it contained stage for musicians.
However, the todays plan shows the same entrances but park is quit modified. The upper west rose garden remained same and other two were removed and a little big rose garden is established in the center of the area and all the seats are placed in four sides of it. The stage for musicians is coverted to the Amphitheatre for cencerts that contain much seating space for audience. The pond for water planced and the glasshouse is converted to children's play area and water feature. An outside change is that entrance for underground car park is built from the eldon street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the park in 1920 and the present day, including the addition of the underground car park and the transformation of the glasshouse and pond. You have made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. However, the response would be stronger if you had grouped the information more logically—for example, by discussing all features that were removed or added together, rather than jumping between locations. The overview is present but could be more concise to better highlight the most significant transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'However' to link sentences. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'An outside change is that entrance for underground car park is built'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between the description of the 1920 park and the modern park would improve the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'modifications', 'converted', and 'established'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice or spelling errors, such as 'uderground', 'pound' (instead of pond), and 'cencerts'. Additionally, phrases like 'how it was looked' are non-standard. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for spatial descriptions and ensure accurate spelling of key terms related to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an ability to use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with articles ('the center of park'), subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency ('how it was looked'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and occur regularly. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with prepositions and article usage, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater precision.
