Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the park in 1920 and today, but the overview is weak. The introduction is repetitive and lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, such as the shift from a formal garden layout to a more recreational space. While you identify key features like the rose garden and the amphitheatre, the comparison between the two time periods is somewhat mechanical. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, concise overview in the introduction that highlights the primary transformation of the park, rather than just listing features in a chronological sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'and also' and 'at lastly'. The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'which is to the children's park'). To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly, and ensure that your paragraphing is used to group related information more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. You rely on simple descriptors like 'small beautiful' and 'added some more'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'they located some of the seats' instead of 'seats were situated'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to maps and urban planning, such as 'replaced', 'transformed', 'converted', or 'situated'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and verbs will help you convey the changes more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include incorrect article usage ('an a children's play area'), subject-verb agreement ('there is three of rose gardens'), and awkward sentence construction ('the removal of stage for musicians'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many run-on sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structure, particularly the use of articles and pluralisation, and work on reducing the number of errors in your complex sentences to ensure your meaning is always clear.
