IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the changes that occurred after development between the two eras, 1920 and right now.

Overall, there are a lot of changes that have occurred in some amenities but also some facilities for visitors. Some structures were demolished, and new setups were built on them. Although there is an addition of one entrance, previous entrances remain unchanged.

The entrance from Arlond Road remains the same, but on the west side of it, the seats are demolished, but the rose garden next to it remains the same, and the rose garden on the eastern side has been changed into a cafe. Next to the rose garden, the pond was changed into a children's area, and the seats in front of the pond were demolished.

The entrance from Eldon Street remains unchanged. On the right side of the entrance, Glasshouse was converted into a water feature, and an entrance is next to the feature. On the western side of the entrance, two seats and a rose garden were removed, but a fountain in front of the entrance was converted into a rose garden and seats on all sides of the garden. On the eastern side of the central rose garden, a stage for musicians was converted into an amphitheater and concerts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the park's transformation well. You have identified key changes such as the conversion of the pond to a children's area and the glasshouse to a water feature. However, the overview is slightly generic; it would be stronger to highlight the most significant trend, such as the shift from a passive, ornamental space to a more active, facility-oriented park. While you mention the entrances, the description of the layout is sometimes repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'main features' are clearly synthesised rather than just listed location by location.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised, with clear paragraphing that separates the different sections of the park. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'on the west side' and 'on the eastern side', which help the reader follow the spatial changes. However, the flow between sentences can feel a bit mechanical, relying heavily on simple directional markers. To improve, try using more varied linking phrases to connect the changes, such as 'In contrast to the original layout' or 'Furthermore, the area previously occupied by...'. Overall, the progression of information is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished', 'converted', 'amenities', and 'amphitheater' correctly. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'changed' and 'remains'. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise synonyms for change, such as 'transformed', 'replaced', 'redeveloped', or 'modernised'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and variety required for a higher band score. Focus on using more specific collocations related to urban planning and landscape design.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the seats are demolished' (should be 'were demolished' to maintain tense consistency with the past) and 'an entrance is next to the feature' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You have a good grasp of passive voice, which is appropriate for describing changes in a map task. To improve, ensure consistent tense usage when describing past states versus current ones and aim for more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control.
