Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided two maps are an illustration of a public Grange park in 1920 when it was first opened, and its view today.

Overall, it can be seen that the park has undergone some significant changes. There are certain new features that have been added, like a cafe and Amphitheater for concerts. Also some of the features have been removed.

Looking at the layouts, In 1920, the central area of a public park was covered by a fountain, now it has been replaced by a rose garden, surrounded by four seats in all directions. Initially, in the north-eastern corner there were a rose garden, and a pond for water plants, currently, they have been transformed into a cafe and a area for children's leisure activities. In the western side, a place was occupied by only a stage for musicians, but presently, they have established a Amphitheater for concerts.

Now, all the three rose gardens have been demolished only one garden remains in the north-western corner. A new feature has been introduced, named water park which is next to the entrance side. The two entrance gate are remained, one from northern side on the Arnold street, and other from southern part on the Eldon street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features and provides a clear comparison between 1920 and the present day. You have highlighted key changes, such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden and the addition of the amphitheater and water park. However, the description of the rose gardens is slightly confusing; you mention that 'all the three rose gardens have been demolished' while simultaneously noting one remains, which contradicts the visual evidence of the map. To improve, ensure that your summary of spatial changes is precise and avoids contradictory statements. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'initially,' 'currently,' and 'presently' to guide the reader through the timeline. However, the paragraphing could be more balanced; the second body paragraph is quite dense. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas between sentences is smoother, particularly when describing the movement from one area of the park to another.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished,' 'transformed,' and 'introduced.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'two entrance gate are remained' (should be 'gates remain') and 'a Amphitheater' (should be 'an amphitheater'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'change' or 'add' to enhance the descriptive quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'The provided two maps are an illustration' (should be 'The two maps illustrate') and 'the two entrance gate are remained.' These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
