IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrate a public park in 1920 and the same park today.

Overall, the park plan in 1920 is not the same as now. There are several changes, and the main aspect in today’s plan is containing new facilities for people such as, the children’s play area and the amphitheater for concerts.

In 1920, the grange park had a pond for water plants next to a rose garden in the right part, which is transformed to a children’s play area now with changing the rose garden to a café. In the southern part, in front of the pond there was a glasshouse and now it is converted to a water feature. There was a fountain in the center of the park, which is now a rose garden rounded with seats.

When it opened, the public park was containing a stage for musicians between two rose gardens however, now it is a large amphitheater for concerts next to one rose garden only. Both plans have the same two entrances, one in the northern part in the Arlond avenue and the other one in the south in Eldon street. Nevertheless, in today’s plan there was a new entrance underground for cars.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the park, including the transformation of the pond, the glasshouse, and the addition of the amphitheater and underground entrance. The overview is clear and highlights the main changes effectively. However, the description could be more precise; for instance, stating the pond was 'transformed to a children’s play area' is accurate, but the spatial relationships (e.g., 'in the right part') could be described with more sophisticated directional language. The report is well-structured and addresses the prompt's requirements for summarising and comparing information, though it lacks a slightly more analytical tone to reach the highest bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location or feature. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'In the southern part', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the shift between the description of the pond and the glasshouse could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the sentence structure in the final paragraph regarding the entrances is slightly clunky, which affects the overall flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'amphitheater', 'converted', and 'transformed' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'rounded with seats' (should be 'surrounded by') and 'the park was containing' (which is grammatically awkward). While the range is sufficient to convey the necessary information, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. The student relies on basic descriptive verbs rather than more varied, academic alternatives that would better suit a report on geographical changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the main aspect in today’s plan is containing new facilities' (should be 'is the addition of') and 'with changing the rose garden' (should be 'with the rose garden being changed'). Additionally, the phrase 'in today’s plan there was a new entrance' uses an incorrect tense for a description of a current state. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to verb tenses and prepositional usage is needed.
