IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided maps compare the layout of the Grange park in 1920 and how it looks today after renovation.

Overall, the public park has undergone significant changes after it's redevelopment. The major changes include a water feature, a underground car park, the removal of the fountain, an inclusion of children's play area and reconstruction of musicians' stage into a amphitheatre for concerts.

In 1920, a fountain was located at the center of the park. Left to that, a stage for musicians was situated. There were five seating arrangements at the sides of the park, three of which were surrounded by rose gardens. A glasshouse can be noticed at the bottom-right corner. At the top-right corner ponds for water plants was located and the park had two main entrance, one at the top center and another at the bottom center.

Today, the pond at the top-right corner has been changed to a play area for children and in the former rose garden in front of that is now a cafe. While both the entrances and the top-left rose garden remained in the same spot, an amphitheatre for concerts with a large audience capacity is constructed in the former musicians' stage location. Moreover, the original fountain is now a rose garden surrounded by four seating arrangements. Furthermore, the glasshouse is not converted into a water feature. One of the significant facilities today at the park is the development of an entrance underground car park at the bottom-left corner of the eldom street

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the maps, including the removal of the fountain, the addition of the amphitheatre, and the new car park. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data; for instance, you mention the glasshouse was 'not converted into a water feature', whereas the map shows it was replaced by one. Additionally, the description of the car park location is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that every detail mentioned is accurately reflected in the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific details of the past and present. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'Today', 'While', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the changes. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the transition between the description of the past and the present could be more fluid. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'amphitheatre', and 'reconstruction'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Left to that' (should be 'To the left') and 'entrance underground car park' (which is slightly redundant). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive verbs and spatial prepositions would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'after it's redevelopment' (should be 'its'), 'ponds... was located' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'is not converted' (should be 'was converted'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and possessive pronoun usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures.
