IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided maps compare the layout of the Grange park in 1920 and how it looks today after renovation.
Overall, the public park has undergone significant changes after it's redevelopment. The major changes include a water feature, a underground car park, the removal of the fountain, an inclusion of children's play area and reconstruction of musicians' stage into a amphitheatre for concerts.
In 1920, a fountain was located at the center of the park. Left to that, a stage for musicians was situated. There were five seating arrangements at the sides of the park, three of which were surrounded by rose gardens. A glasshouse can be noticed at the bottom-right corner. At the top-right corner ponds for water plants was located and the park had two main entrance, one at the top center and another at the bottom center.
Today, the pond at the top-right corner has been changed to a play area for children and in the former rose garden in front of that is now a cafe. While both the entrances and the top-left rose garden remained in the same spot, an amphitheatre for concerts with a large audience capacity is constructed in the former musicians' stage location. Moreover, the original fountain is now a rose garden surrounded by four seating arrangements. Furthermore, the glasshouse is not converted into a water feature. One of the significant facilities today at the park is the development of an entrance underground car park at the bottom-left corner of the eldom street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the maps, including the major additions and removals. You have successfully identified the transformation of the musicians' stage into an amphitheatre and the fountain into a rose garden. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, there are minor inaccuracies in detail; for instance, you mention the glasshouse was 'not converted into a water feature', whereas the map shows it was replaced by a water feature. Additionally, the term 'eldom street' is not present on the provided map, suggesting a slight misinterpretation of the visual data. Despite these minor points, the response is well-structured and provides a clear summary of the changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present states respectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'Today', 'While', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two time periods. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, although the transition between the description of the 1920 layout and the current layout could be slightly more integrated to emphasize the contrast. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'amphitheatre', 'reconstruction', and 'capacity'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'Left to that' (should be 'To the left of that') and 'an underground car park' (you used 'a' before 'underground'). The phrase 'is not converted into' is also slightly confusing given the visual evidence. However, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication of the spatial changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'it's redevelopment' (should be 'its'), 'an amphitheatre' (correct), but 'a amphitheatre' (incorrect), and 'had two main entrance' (should be 'entrances'). Subject-verb agreement is occasionally inconsistent, such as 'ponds... was located'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the range of structures is sufficient to convey the information clearly. Focusing on proofreading for articles and pluralization would help improve your accuracy.
