The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The maps illustrate the changes that have taken place in Grange Park between 1920 and the present day.
Overall, the park has been significantly modernised with the addition of new recreational facilities and improved public amenities. While some original features have been retained, others have been removed or replaced.
In 1920, Grange Park had a relatively simple design. There were three rose gardens located in the north-west, north-east and south-west corners of the park. A stage for musicians was situated on the western side, while a fountain occupied the centre. In the north-east corner, there was a pond for water plants, and a glasshouse was positioned in the south-east area. Seats were placed around different parts of the park, and there were entrances from both Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street.
Today, the layout of the park has changed considerably. The stage for musicians has been replaced by a large amphitheatre for concerts on the western side. The central fountain has been removed and replaced with a rose garden surrounded by seats. In the north-east section, a cafe and a children's play area have been added, while the pond and glasshouse no longer exist. In the south-east corner, a modern water feature has been constructed. Furthermore, an underground entrance has been introduced on the eastern side of the park.
