IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two diagram illustrate a public park constructed in 1920 and the changes that have been made to the park as of today.
Overall, the Grange park has been completely redesigned as compared to the past. Many thinks have been added such as an Amphitheatre, a cafe and a children's playground while replacing things like the fountain, the pond, the glasshouse and so on.
Detailed analysis of these diagrams showcases the removal of the fountain from the middle of the park by replacing it with a rose garden with seats along its four sides. The pond which was used for water plants has been converted into a children's play area and the rose garden just at the left of the pond has also been reconstructed into a cafe. The glasshouse at the bottom right of the map has been converted into a water feature along with an entrance to the underground car park.
In addition to this, the rose garden, a stage of musicians as well as some seats have been removed from the bottom left side of the map and an Amphitheatre has been constructed which is mainly used for concerts now. All the seats from all around the map have been placed at the middle of the map surrounding the rose garden.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the park and provided a clear comparison between 1920 and the present day. You covered all the significant changes, such as the addition of the amphitheatre, the cafe, and the conversion of the pond. The overview is clear and sets the tone for the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are precise; for instance, you mentioned a 'rose garden' in the middle, but the map shows a 'rose garden' in the top-left, while the central feature is a 'fountain' (1920) replaced by a 'rose garden' (today). Accuracy in reporting spatial details is crucial for this task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by location and feature type. You used cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'as compared to' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that your referencing is precise; for example, when you mention 'the rose garden just at the left of the pond', it is clear, but ensure that your transitions between paragraphs do not feel slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redesigned', 'converted', 'reconstructed', and 'amphitheatre'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and informal phrasing, such as 'Many thinks have been added' (should be 'things') and 'the two diagram' (should be 'diagrams'). The use of 'so on' is a bit informal for an academic report. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to urban planning or map description, such as 'replaced by' or 'transformed into', and ensure consistent proofreading to avoid simple word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'The two diagram illustrate' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'Many thinks have been added' (incorrect word choice). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You show good control over passive voice, which is appropriate for this task type (e.g., 'has been converted', 'have been removed'). Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will help improve your accuracy and reach a higher band.
