IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two diagrams illustrate a public park constructed in 1920 and the changes that have been made to the park as of today.

Overall, the Grange Park has been completely redesigned as compared to the past. Many things have been added such as an Amphitheatre, a cafe and a children's playground while replacing things like the fountain, the pond, the glasshouse and so on.

Detailed analysis of these diagrams showcases the removal of the fountain from the middle of the park by replacing it with a rose garden with seats along its four sides. The pond which was used for water plants has been converted into a children's play area and the rose garden just at the left of the pond has also been reconstructed into a cafe. The glasshouse at the bottom right of the map has been converted into a water feature along with an entrance to the underground car park.

In addition to this, the rose garden, a stage of musicians as well as some seats have been removed from the bottom left side of the map and an Amphitheatre has been constructed which is mainly used for concerts now. All the seats from all around the map have been placed at the middle of the map surrounding the rose garden.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the park in 1920 and today. You have clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the removal of the fountain and the addition of the amphitheatre. The overview provides a good summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, you mention 'the rose garden just at the left of the pond', but the map shows the rose garden was in the top left corner, not the left of the pond. Accuracy in spatial description is vital for Task 1. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'as well as' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general overview from the specific details. To improve, ensure that referencing is always clear; for example, 'the rose garden' is mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs, which could be confusing if the reader is not careful. Overall, the flow is smooth and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redesigned', 'converted', and 'constructed'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'showcases the removal' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'the rose garden just at the left of the pond' (which is spatially inaccurate). Using more precise geographical language would enhance your score. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that the meaning is never obscured. There are occasional minor grammatical slips, such as 'as compared to the past' (which is slightly redundant) and 'at the middle of the map' (where 'in' would be more natural). Punctuation is generally accurate. To move to a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or relative clauses, to describe the changes more fluidly.
