IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the present condition of the park.

Overall, the park has been redesigned and some extra features have been added for people. An amphitheatre for concerts and an entrance to an underground car park have been built.

In 1920, when the park first opened, it had a fountain at its centre. Entrances were available on two sides of the fountain and there was a simple old stage for musicians to perform. Seats were built for sitting, but they were placed at a large distance along the walls of the park. Two rose gardens were built along the walls of Arnold Avenue, on the left and right of the entrance. There was also one rose garden and a glasshouse on Eldon Street. A pond for water plants was located in the top right corner.

At present, the rose garden has been moved to the centre of the park and seats have been built around it. The old stage has been converted into an amphitheatre for concerts. A children's play area has been added in the top right corner. A water feature has been constructed on the right side, and an entrance to an underground car park is now located outside the park on Eldon Street.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day. Your overview provides a clear summary of the significant changes, such as the redesign and the addition of modern facilities. You have effectively compared the two time periods by noting the relocation of the rose garden and the conversion of the stage. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise details when describing locations; for instance, instead of saying 'on the right side', specify the exact area relative to the park's layout. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all key requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from an introduction and overview to detailed descriptions of the two time periods. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the 1920 layout from the present-day changes. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'At present', and 'there was also' to link ideas smoothly. The flow of information is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. To improve further, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences more dynamically, but the current level of organization is already quite strong and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redesigned', 'converted', 'amphitheatre', and 'underground car park'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for a report on maps. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band. For example, instead of 'seats were built for sitting', you could use 'seating areas were installed'. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive verbs and nouns related to urban planning would enhance the precision of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'When the park first opened, it had a fountain at its centre.' The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors that impede communication. You handle passive voice constructions well, which is essential for describing changes in a process or plan. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional or concessive clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility. However, the current control over punctuation and sentence construction is solid and error-free for the most part.
