IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two maps illustrate how Grange Park, located between Amold Avenue and and Eldon street, has changed since it was first established in 1920. Overall, the park has been modernised and repurposed to create a more recreational and family friendly facilities, while several original features have been removed or replaced.
In 1920, the park had a relatively traditional layout. A central fountain acted as the main focal point, with a stage for musicians positioned to the west. Two rose gardens were located in the southwest and northwest corners, and a third lay in the northeast, there was a pound for water plants, while a glasshouse occupied the southeast corner. Wooden seating areas lined the western and eastern edges of the park.
In the current plan, many of these original elements have been replaced. The fountain has been removed and substituted with a circular rose garden surrounded by seating. The former stage area in the west has been transformed into a large amphitheatre for concerts. To the east, the pond has been replaced by a children's play area, and the glasshouse has made the way for a water feature connected to a newly build underground car park. The cafe, which did not previously exist, now occupies the northeast section of the park, while only one original rose garden- the one in the northwest- remains in its original position.
In conclusion, the park has evolved from simple, ornamnetal garden into a contemporary leisure space with more diverse attraction designed to accommodate modern public use.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the changes and successfully highlighted the main features, such as the removal of the fountain and the addition of the amphitheatre and cafe. The comparisons between 1920 and the present day are accurate and well-supported by the visual data. You have successfully identified the key transformations, such as the repurposing of the pond and glasshouse. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details are perfectly accurate; for instance, you mentioned the glasshouse made way for a water feature, but the map shows it was replaced by an underground car park entrance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, the 1920 description, the current layout, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'In the current plan', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, although some transitions could be more sophisticated. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the development of the response well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and changes, such as 'modernised', 'repurposed', 'focal point', and 'amphitheatre'. There is an attempt to use less common items, which adds precision to your descriptions. However, there are a few minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'made the way for' (should be 'made way for'), 'newly build' (should be 'newly built'), and 'ornamnetal' (spelling). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the double 'and' in the first sentence and the incorrect verb form in 'newly build'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a minor error with the hyphenation in 'rose garden- the one'. These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your description of the park's evolution with ease.
