Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes that have taken place in Grange Park between 1920 and the present time.

Overall, it can be seen that the park has undergone significant redevelopment. several original features, such as the stage of musicians, fountain, glasshouse and pond for water plants, have been removed and replaced with modern facilities, including an amphitheatre, cafe, children's play area and water feature. the rose garden and entrance have largely remained.

In1920, Grange Park had three rose gardens, located near the corners of the park. There were also several seats around the garden. In the center of the park, there was the fountain, while the stage for the musician was situated on the western side. A pond for water plants was in north-east corner and a glass house located in the south-east corner.

Today, the park has much more modern layout. Only one rose garden remains, positioned in the central area and surrounded by seats. The formal stage for musicians has been replaced by large amphitheater for concerts on the western side. In addition, a cafe has been constructed in the north-east area, next to a children's play area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and comparing the 1920 layout with the present day. You have successfully highlighted key changes, such as the removal of the stage and fountain and the addition of the amphitheatre and cafe. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the overall transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all significant changes are mentioned; for instance, the addition of the water feature and the children's play area were noted, but the removal of the pond could have been explicitly contrasted with the new water feature to provide a more comprehensive comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'while', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the transition between the description of the 1920 layout and the present day would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'amphitheatre', and 'situated' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'stage of musicians' (should be 'musicians' stage' or 'bandstand') and 'water plants' (should be 'aquatic plants'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and less common descriptive language would elevate the response. The spelling is generally accurate, and the vocabulary used is relevant to the topic of urban planning and map description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the stage', 'the fountain', 'the cafe') and capitalization issues at the start of sentences (e.g., 'several', 'the'). Additionally, 'In1920' is a typographical error. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent use of articles and proofreading for basic punctuation and capitalization. Increasing the use of more complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice for describing changes, would also help demonstrate a wider range.
