IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plan diagrams show a comparative view of subjects in a public park from its opening year (1920) till today.

Overall, the plan diagrams represent location of subjects in the Grange park and their change in the location as time passed. The major change happened in these years is that subjects are now arranged in the meaningful manner which can clearly be seen as a progress.

Specifically, when the park was first inaugurated, some of the subjects like Rose gardens, Seats were scattered all across the park which then arranged in sequential manner around the Rose garden that can be seen in today plan diagram, While the outside entrances were kept same like when it was first opened but the new car parking underground entrance is available now a days.

Furthermore, Stage for musicians is now replaced and updated with a big Amphitheatre for concerts which is now placed right on the beginning of the park. In contrast, there are few things which are new today like Cafe, Children's play area, while the Fountain is replaced with a Water feature subject.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the park in 1920 and today, including the addition of the amphitheatre, the cafe, and the water feature. However, the response lacks precision in describing the spatial layout. For example, you mention that features were 'scattered' but do not clearly describe the specific locations (e.g., the north or south sides). Furthermore, the term 'subjects' is used repeatedly to refer to park features, which is not appropriate in this context. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the relative positions of the features and ensure all key changes are described with greater accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Specifically', 'Furthermore', and 'In contrast' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'subjects are now arranged in the meaningful manner'. The referencing is sometimes unclear; for instance, 'the outside entrances were kept same' is vague. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the transition between ideas could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. The consistent use of the word 'subjects' to describe park facilities (e.g., 'location of subjects', 'new car parking underground entrance is available now a days') is unnatural and inaccurate. You attempt some descriptive language, such as 'inaugurated' and 'sequential manner', which is positive. However, there are errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'right on the beginning of the park' instead of 'at the entrance'. To improve, focus on using specific terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'facilities', 'amenities', or 'features'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the plan diagrams represent location of subjects' (missing articles), 'in the meaningful manner' (incorrect article usage), and 'today plan diagram' (should be 'today's plan diagram'). Additionally, the sentence 'The major change happened in these years is that...' is grammatically flawed. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your writing. Increasing your control over articles and prepositions will significantly improve your score.
