IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Overall, the Grange park underwent significant development. The stage for musicians was converted into the Amphitheatre for concerts and the fountain was converted into the Rose garden. Moreover, the pond for water plants was replaced by children's play area and water feature was built on the southeast.

Initially, the stage for musicians on the right side was replaced by the Amphitheatre for concerts. The fountain in the centre of the park was changed into rose garden, with seats around. In addition, the rose garden below stage for musicians was completely diminished.

In the left side, the rose garden was replaced by a cafe. Next to cafe, the children's play area was built in the place of pond for water plants. The glasshouse on southeast of the park was replaced by water lettuce. Moreover, the entrance underground car park was constructed newly in the Grange park.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the park's transformation, including the conversion of the stage, fountain, and pond, as well as the addition of new facilities like the cafe and car park. The overview is clear and highlights the main trend of significant development. However, the report could be improved by grouping features more logically rather than listing them sequentially. For instance, the distinction between recreational facilities and landscaping changes could be more pronounced. Overall, the response effectively summarizes the information provided in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific changes. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Initially', and 'In addition' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is generally clear, moving from the center to the sides of the park. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on varying the cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and less repetitive in structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'significant development', 'converted', and 'diminished' used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'water lettuce' (which is a plant, not a feature) and 'constructed newly'. The range is sufficient to convey the necessary information, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Incorporating more precise terminology regarding spatial relationships and architectural changes would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in the place of pond', 'on southeast of the park') and awkward phrasing ('was constructed newly'). The control of grammar is generally good, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on article usage and prepositional accuracy would significantly improve the overall grammatical control of the writing.
