Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps detail the layout of a public part in 1920 and its present state. Overall, the park changed signifinatly throughout the years, with various facilities reconstructed to better service the residents.

In 1920, the park consisted of a fountain that lay at the epicentre, with two entrances stationed at its northern and southern end. North-east to the fountain, there was a rose garden and a pond for water plants, and seats for weary visitors south of the pond. In additon, a glasshouse was located directly right of the southern entrance. Similarly, west to the fountain, there was astage for musicians left to the fountain. Both the northern and southern end of the stage consisted of a rose garden surrounded by seats on each side.

Present day the part saw significant modifications. The fountain at the centre was remodeled into a rose garded baricaded by seats of all four sides. The two entrances are located in the same spot, with a third underground entrance introduced for parking cars. On the eastern front where the rose garden and pond used to lay, a cafe and children's play area was erected and the space below was utilizrd to include a water feature. Moving on to the western wing, the rose garden at the north eastern end still remained but below it an amphit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the 1920 layout and the present-day changes. You successfully identified key transformations, such as the conversion of the fountain into a rose garden and the addition of the cafe and underground parking. However, the response is incomplete, as it cuts off mid-sentence at the end ('below it an amphit'). Because the description of the western wing is unfinished, the task is not fully addressed. To improve, ensure you complete your summary of all major changes and provide a clear, concise overview of the most significant trends, such as the shift from a more formal garden layout to a more facility-oriented public space.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the chronological progression from 1920 to the present. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition', 'Similarly', and 'Moving on to', to link ideas. However, the abrupt ending significantly disrupts the flow and coherence of the final paragraph. Additionally, some referencing is slightly confusing, such as 'the part saw significant modifications' (likely a typo for 'park') and the repetitive use of 'to the fountain' in the second paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a complete, logical conclusion would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'epicentre', 'remodeled', 'baricaded', and 'erected'. However, there are several spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'signifinatly' (significantly), 'part' (park), 'garded' (garden), and 'baricaded' (barricaded/surrounded). These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede the reader's understanding of the main features. To reach a higher band, focus on accurate spelling and using more precise collocations, such as 'surrounded by' instead of 'baricaded by' in the context of a garden.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to describe spatial relationships using prepositions ('North-east to the fountain', 'west to the fountain'), there are some awkward phrasings and grammatical slips, such as 'the park changed signifinatly throughout the years' (should be 'over the years') and 'left to the fountain'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete final sentence is a major grammatical issue. To improve, focus on consistent verb tense usage when describing past versus present states and ensure all sentences are fully formed and grammatically sound.
