IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps below illustrate the comparison of the layout of the Grange park in the past in 1920 and at present.

Overall, the infrastructure underwent significant modernization.

The location of the rose garden has remained unaltered. A substantial number of new activities have been involved in the park today. The entrance locations from the two streets have not been moved, although a new entrance has been added.

In the past, there were two rose gardens on either side of the entrance. Currently, one of the gardens has been relocated to the center of the park. A plethora of several buildings such as, a cafe and the playground for children is now a significant part of the park. The central fountain and the music stage have been demolished. At present, there is an amphitheatre for the public to enjoy concerts.

Another entrance has been added from the parking place, aside from the Arnold and Eldon streets. A segregated water place is added for unwinding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the park's transformation well. You successfully identified key changes, such as the addition of the amphitheatre and the relocation of the rose garden. However, the description of the layout is slightly imprecise; for instance, stating there were 'two rose gardens on either side of the entrance' in 1920 is not entirely accurate based on the visual data provided. Additionally, while you mention the new entrance, the report would benefit from more specific comparisons regarding the size or placement of the new facilities relative to the old ones to fully meet the requirements for a Band 7 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In the past', 'Currently', and 'At present', which help the reader follow the chronological progression. However, the paragraphing is a bit disjointed; the final sentence about the 'segregated water place' feels like an afterthought and should have been integrated into the main body of the text. Improving the flow between sentences would help move the response into a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'modernization', 'demolished', and 'amphitheatre' effectively. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'a plethora of several buildings' (which is redundant) and 'segregated water place' (which is not a standard term for a water feature). To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for map descriptions and avoiding redundant phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'a new activities have been involved' (which is passive voice misuse) and 'such as, a cafe' (where the comma is unnecessary). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
