IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans above illustrate a public park in Arnold Avenue, named Grange Park and compares it to when it was first established and where it stands today.

At a first glance, it can be seen that there have been many structural changes to the park if we compare it to when it was first opened in 1920. The addition of children's play area, a cafe and an amphitheatre for concerts are examples of such modifications.

Back in 1920, there was an overall different layout for for the park itself. The seats were scattered in two different areas with some distance, between them. Whereas today, the seats are neatly arranged surrounding all four sides of a rose garden. Previously, there were three rose gardens, two of which were located in the east side and one towards the west side. Meanwhile today, there are only two rose gardens in the park. One of it is located at the same place as it was in 1920, towards the east, and the other one is located in the center of the park, surrounded by seating areas. Previously, there was a water fountain in the center, but it has been removed , and a water feature is added towards the northwest side of the park, and the glasshouse at its place has been removed. Additionally, the area in which the pond existed , for the water park in the past, has been replaced with children's play area in present.

Overall, there seems to have some major and minor changes done to the park over the years, possibly due to the demand of population and availability of better infrastructure over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the park's transformation. You have clearly highlighted the addition of the amphitheatre, cafe, and play area, as well as the removal of the fountain and glasshouse. The comparison between 1920 and the present is consistent. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention changes, you could have provided a more concise summary of the most significant trends, such as the shift from a more open, garden-focused layout to a more facility-oriented park. Overall, the task is well-addressed with sufficient detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'meanwhile', and 'additionally' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general overview from the specific details. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother in places, such as the sentence 'One of it is located...', which disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of information is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'structural changes', 'modifications', and 'neatly arranged'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'One of it' instead of 'One of them' and 'at its place' instead of 'in its place'. While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, the range is adequate rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that pronouns correctly refer back to their nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there seems to have some major... changes' (should be 'there seem to have been') and 'a water feature is added' (should be 'has been added'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some unnecessary spaces before commas. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would improve this score.
