Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the expansion of the stage and the replacement of the fountain. However, there are some inaccuracies in the reporting of information. For instance, the student mentions a 'glasshouse' being demolished, which is not clearly supported by the provided visual data, and the description of the current park layout is slightly confusing regarding the location of the new water feature and the rose garden. While the overview is present, it lacks a clear, concise summary of the most significant trends. To improve, ensure that all reported details are strictly based on the provided visual evidence and focus on highlighting the most prominent changes rather than listing every minor detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and some mechanical use of transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing the spatial layout of the park, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the exact location of the features being discussed. Improving the precision of spatial language would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with attempts to use topic-specific terms like 'amenities', 'renovations', 'demolished', and 'amphitheatre'. However, there are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the two maps depicts' (should be 'depict') and 'apart by pond' (should be 'separated by a pond'). The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the lack of precision in describing the spatial relationships limits the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations for describing map changes and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the two maps depicts', 'the fountain were replaced') and article usage errors ('a replacement of fountain'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to be noticeable. The punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate better control. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb agreement and articles, would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
