IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps illustrate the difference between the original infrastructure of Grange Park in 1920 and the renovation on present day.
Overall, the Arnold Avenue has undergone with complete change of Platform for music show, Water plants pond, Glasshouse, and Fountain. Certain facilities like seats, rose garden, and seats are relocated for the better view.
While in 1920, the fountain was located in the center of the park, it was replaced by the rose garden; and seats were relocated at adjucent to that rose garden. Another major change was the Glasshouse, Pond for water plants, and north-east side rose garden has been replaced by Water fountain, Kids' play ground and Cafe respectively.
It is also observed that the stage for music artists was replaced with theater in present. Considering the other modifications besides Eldon street underground car parking was introduced in the contemporary era. However, the new amenities were developed only in the area available in past.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the relocation of the rose garden and the introduction of the underground car park. However, the summary is somewhat disjointed and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While you mention that the park has undergone a 'complete change', the description of specific features is occasionally confusing, such as the claim that the 'Glasshouse' was replaced by a 'Water fountain', which does not align clearly with the provided visual data. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends—such as the shift from a more open, nature-focused layout to a more facility-heavy, modern park—rather than just listing individual changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the phrase 'While in 1920...' is used to introduce a comparison, but the subsequent sentence structure becomes cluttered. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'respectively' at the end of the third paragraph, which does not clearly map to the three items mentioned. Improving the flow between sentences using more varied linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'relocated', and 'contemporary era'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'renovation on present day' (should be 'in the present day') and 'adjucent' (spelling error). The repetition of 'seats' in the second paragraph also limits the lexical variety. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations when describing map changes, such as 'transformed into' or 'replaced by', and ensure that you check the spelling of key descriptive terms before finalizing your response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'undergone with complete change' (should be 'undergone a complete change') and 'replaced with theater in present' (should be 'replaced by a theater in the present'). The use of articles is also inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will help improve the accuracy of your complex sentences.
