IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
First of all I would like to start from the entrance on the old park there was a park just after the entrance on the left side but now it is not which I think is not a good thing. On the other hand where there were only a few seats now there is an amphitheater for concert which is a great sort of entertainment. The rose garden is in the same place behind that stage which is a good thing because I am in favor of trees flowers and other green things. Moreover instead of the water fountain now there is a rose garden and also seats around it to air which is a very good thing. On the right side after the entrance now there is water feature instead of glass house and I think that the water feature is more attractive. Most importantly the children area is the most relaxable place for the parents. They can simply send their children to that area and enjoy the other things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of providing an objective summary of the changes, the text is written in a subjective, conversational tone, frequently using personal opinions such as 'which I think is not a good thing' and 'I am in favor of trees'. An IELTS report must be neutral and analytical. While you identify some changes, such as the amphitheater and the water feature, you fail to provide an overview of the most significant trends or a clear comparison between the two time periods. The focus is on personal commentary rather than reporting data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks paragraphing, appearing as a single block of text. This makes the information difficult to follow. While there are some basic cohesive devices used, such as 'First of all', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover', the progression of ideas is disjointed. The referencing is often unclear; for example, 'behind that stage' assumes the reader knows exactly which stage is being referred to without a clear introduction. The lack of a structured approach—such as an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs—significantly hinders the logical flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely on simple descriptors like 'good thing' and 'nice' (implied). There is little attempt to use precise vocabulary related to urban planning or map description (e.g., 'replaced by', 'transformed', 'situated', 'adjacent to'). Phrases like 'most relaxable place' are non-standard and indicate a lack of control over word formation. To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary for describing changes in maps, such as 'demolished', 'constructed', 'relocated', and 'expanded'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammar is characterized by frequent errors in sentence structure and punctuation. Many sentences are run-on or lack necessary commas, such as 'On the right side after the entrance now there is water feature instead of glass house'. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the control over basic grammar is inconsistent. Errors such as 'children area' (should be 'children's area') and 'to air' (which is unclear in context) impede the clarity of your message. You need to focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
