IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The below diagram compares the structure of the Grange Park Arnold Avenue on Eldon Street in 1920 and as of today.

Major changes in the design and architecture could be found. While in 1920 the main center of attention had been a fountain, today it was the rose garden.

Previously, there were three rose gardens located around the perimeter of the garden and the seats adjacent to it. The stage for musicians were located between them at the west of the garden. Two main entrances were given leading to the center of the park. Additionally, a pond for water plants and glasshouse were located at the east side with a seat in middle.

Noticeable changes could be found today. The park now encompassed two rose gardens, one being in the middle, surrounded by seats . On the west side, an Amphitheater for concerts has been located with the second rose garden to the left of it. Moreover, an underground car park, cafe, children's play area and a water feature is situated at the east side of the park, with the same two entrance that were earlier in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the park in 1920 and today, providing a clear overview of the transformation. You successfully identified key changes, such as the shift from a fountain to a rose garden and the addition of modern facilities like the underground car park and cafe. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, you mention the 'stage for musicians' in 1920 but do not explicitly contrast its location or function with the modern 'Amphitheater'. Additionally, some details are slightly inaccurate, such as stating there were 'three rose gardens' in 1920 when the map shows them as smaller flower beds. Overall, the summary is clear and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction followed by body paragraphs that contrast the two time periods. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'While', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover', to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within the second body paragraph could be smoother. For example, the transition from the rose garden to the car park and cafe is a bit list-like. Improving the use of referencing and varied linking phrases would help the text flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'perimeter', 'encompassed', and 'Amphitheater' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'main center of attention' (redundant) and 'same two entrance that were earlier in the past' (clunky phrasing). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some expressions feel slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated in the north-east corner' or 'replaced by'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The stage for musicians were located' (subject-verb agreement) and 'same two entrance' (pluralization error). Additionally, there are some tense inconsistencies, such as 'today it was the rose garden' (should be 'is'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure that subject-verb agreement is consistent and pay closer attention to tense usage when describing present-day features versus historical ones.
