IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The first diagram illustrates the layout of a public park when it initially opened in 1920 and another diagram demonstrates the present design and infrastructure of the park.
Overall, the park became considerably more developed, with several new modern facilities being constructed such as a cafe and amphitheatre and several existing features being removed like a glasshouse.
In 1920, there were many areas in the park, however, most of these areas were same such as five seats and three rose gardens. There were two seats in the west and three were in the other three sides of the park. Moreover, there were two rose gardens in the north and one in the south. There was a fountain in the center of the park and musician stage to the western side. There was a pond for water plants in the northeast corner and a glasshouse in southeast corner.
Now, there are many places being removed and replaced. There are two rose gardens, one in the northwest side and another one in the center of the park, which is sorrounded by four seats. The glass house is occupied by a water feature area and children's play area is constracted in north east corner. The entrances remain on the same locations, however, the musician stage is replaced by armphitheatre for cincerts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the park in 1920 and today. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes, such as the removal of the glasshouse and the addition of the amphitheatre and children's play area. However, the description of the 1920 layout is slightly repetitive and could be more concise. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more explicit; for example, instead of listing the seats in 1920, you could group them more effectively to highlight the overall change in park density. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the significant transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'however', 'moreover', and 'now' to link sentences. While the structure is sound, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the referencing (e.g., 'these areas') is always precise to avoid any ambiguity for the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the historical data from the current state.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'amphitheatre', and 'sorrounded' (though this is misspelled). There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'constracted' instead of 'constructed' and 'cincerts' instead of 'concerts'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise descriptive language for spatial relationships and ensure accurate spelling of technical terms related to the map features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'most of these areas were same' (should be 'the same') and 'musician stage to the western side' (missing 'a' or 'the'). Additionally, there are minor issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To improve, proofread your work specifically for small articles ('a', 'the') and ensure that your verb tenses remain consistent when describing the past versus the present.
