Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well by summarising the main features of the public park in 1920 and today, and makes relevant comparisons between the two periods. The overview clearly identifies the major developments, such as the introduction of the children's play area and amphitheatre, and the removal of features like the glasshouse and stage. Key details are supported by specific references to the maps, such as the rose gardens and the new cafe. While there are a few minor omissions regarding minor pathways, the overall summary is well-developed and fulfils the requirements of Task 1 effectively, aligning closely with Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It begins with an introductory statement, moves into a clear overall summary paragraph, then details the layout of 1920, and finally contrasts it with the current layout in the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'In 1920', 'Currently', and 'One rose garden at the upper left corner has been remained the same'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct time periods. However, referencing and cohesive transitions are occasionally mechanical, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to maps and urban planning such as 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'amphitheatre', and 'established'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'grange park went undergone significant redevelopment' (incorrect verb combination), 'children play area' (missing possessive 'children's'), and 'seats blocks'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is inconsistent with some awkward phrasing, placing this performance securely within the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. Examples of complex structures include relative clauses and time-contrasting clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'Few features has been removed' (subject-verb agreement error), 'park had two entrance' (pluralisation error), 'has been remained', and 'entrance for undergone car park'. Punctuation and articles are also occasionally misused (e.g., 'at the center feature', 'to the left of fountain'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the grammar score from rising above a Band 5.5.
