Student answer (Band 5.0)

We have a park which was built in 1920 on arnold avenue.but recently the park was renovated and few changes has been made in the park.Park has two entrance since the day it was made but the changes was done in its surrounding to make the ambiance more asthetic and more appealing to the visitors.

like the park before renovation was totally different from todays one . when we entered in the in park on the right side there was glass house before but in todays modren map it is replaced by the beautiful pond with a small waterfall moreover before renovation on te left side their was seatting area along with rose garden view. the seatting area was on both side of the garden and from the rose garden we have also the musician stage and a rose garden along with seatting space on the other side whereas in todays map there is amphitheater along with rose garden on the left side of the building

moreover the center space is also been replaced with rose garden along with the square shaped seatting area whereas before rose garden their was fountain.

in ancient map their was a rose garden along with he pond for water plants beside the other entrance of the park along with the seatting area whereas today their is cafe and children play area instead of those garden and pond.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes to Grange Park between 1920 and today, but it struggles significantly with accuracy and selection of key features. There are several misreadings of the map: for instance, the student states that on the right side there was a glasshouse 'before' (which is correct for the south-east), but confuses the locations on the left and right, misidentifying the amphitheatre and water features. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear overall summary or overview, jumping directly into detailed comparisons. The tone is overly informal and conversational (e.g., 'when we entered in the in park'), rather than objective and analytical as required for Academic Task 1. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, earning a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The organisation of the response is weak. The text lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as one long, dense block of text with run-on sentences. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly and repetitively (e.g., excessive use of 'moreover' and 'whereas'). Progression is difficult to follow because the spatial descriptions jump randomly across the park without a clear, logical pattern (such as moving systematically from north to south or left to right). Referencing is also faulty, making it hard for the reader to track which part of the map is being discussed. This level of organisation aligns with a Band 4.5 to 5.0; however, giving a whole band score, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple words like 'park', 'rose garden', 'seats', and 'map'. There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'arnold avenue' (capitalisation), 'modren' (modern), 'asthetic' (aesthetic), 'te' (the), 'seatting' (seating), and 'children play area' (children's play area). While the student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'renovated', 'ambiance', and 'amphitheater', the high frequency of spelling mistakes and awkward collocations limits the lexical range. This meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. There is a heavy reliance on simple sentence structures, and attempts at complex or compound sentences often contain errors (e.g., 'Park has two entrance since the day it was made but the changes was done...'). Punctuation and capitalization are largely ignored; sentences run together without capital letters at the beginning or proper periods at the end. Subject-verb agreement errors are frequent (e.g., 'few changes has been made', 'there was seatting area'). The range of grammatical structures is limited, and errors frequently cause strain for the reader, placing this performance at a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the descriptors.
