Student answer (Band 6.0)
This chart illustrates the distinct developments that took place in a public park between the year 1920 and today.
Overall, it is evident that the park underwent several modifications, one of them was the stage for musicians, which was replaced by an amphitheatre allocated for concerts. Another significant change was the fountain that was replaced with a rose garden. Meanwhile the old rose garden in the top left was retained.
One of the major change was the rose garden and the water pond that were removed to develop a cafe and a play area dedicated for children. The old glasshouse was replaced by a water feature.
Another crucial development was the seating capacity that was increased by removing the fountain. A new rose garden was also built in between the seats. The musician stage and a rose garden in the bottom left were replaced by an amphitheatre. Moreover, the old entrance was retained.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the park's transformation between 1920 and today, correctly identifying key changes such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden, the amphitheatre, and the addition of the cafe and children's play area. However, the overview provided in the opening paragraph is very brief and lists specific details rather than presenting a broader overarching trend or summary of the spatial changes. Furthermore, the selection and reporting of data contain some repetitive mentions of features across paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the overview should synthesise the transformation more clearly, highlighting the shift from a passive, ornamental park to a more active, recreational space.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The text has a coherent overall arrangement, dividing information into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, progression is sometimes hindered by a somewhat disjointed structure and repetitive detailing of features. Cohesive devices are used, but their application is occasionally mechanical or clumsy, such as 'One of the major change was...' followed by awkward grouping of elements. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are brief and lack internal cohesion, resulting in a fragmented reading experience. Referencing is generally clear, though logical flow between sentences needs strengthening.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'amphitheatre', 'glasshouse', 'water feature', and 'rose garden'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'distinct developments' instead of 'significant changes' or 'modifications', and 'allocated for concerts' rather than 'designed for concerts'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, but the lack of flexibility and occasional imprecise word choices restrict the lexical score to a modest band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and passive structures (e.g., 'which was replaced by an amphitheatre', 'that were removed'). However, there are grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout, such as the singular/plural agreement error in 'One of the major change was...'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence structures can be repetitive and occasionally prone to errors that, while not impeding overall communication, prevent the text from achieving a higher grammatical rating.
