Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram compares the changes in a community park from 1920 to today.
Overall, the rose garden and entrance remained the same. However, a new garden was built in the middle of the park, and a large area is covered by an amphitheatre for concerts.
Moving to the details, the fountain in the center of the park was changed into a new rose garden, with four seats around it. However, the old rose garden on the right side was converted into a cafe. Moreover, the pond for water plants was replaced with a children's play area, while a new water feature was introduced in the bottom right of the park. On the left side, the stage for musicians was converted into an amphitheatre for concerts, and the rose garden and seats at the bottom were finished. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by comparing Grange Park in 1920 with its layout today. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key overarching changes such as the addition of the new central garden and the large amphitheatre. Main features are selected and reported appropriately, including the conversion of the fountain into a rose garden, the replacement of the pond with a children's play area, and the introduction of the café and water feature. Comparisons are made where relevant. While some minor details could be extended further, the response clearly satisfies the core requirements of Academic Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then detailing specific spatial changes. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the map, such as "Moving to the details", "Moreover", and "On the left side". Paragraphing is appropriate, and referencing between sentences is generally clear. However, the transition in the final sentence ("In addition, there is not any chnaged happened...") feels a bit tacked on and awkward, preventing a higher score for cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for describing map changes, using terms like "converted into", "replaced with", "introduced", and "surrounded". However, there are some awkward lexical choices and phrasing, such as "were finished" to describe the removal of features, and a spelling error ("chnaged"). While less common vocabulary is attempted ("amphitheatre", "glasshouse"), the lexical control fluctuates, placing it firmly in the Band 6 territory.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating passive structures such as "was changed into", "was built", and "was replaced with". There are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions, particularly in the final paragraph: "there is not any chnaged happened in left side rose garden". Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. Nonetheless, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the errors do not severely impede communication.
