Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main changes between the 1920 and present-day layouts of Grange Park. The writer correctly identifies several key transformations, such as the conversion of the stage into an amphitheatre, the replacement of the fountain with a central rose garden surrounded by seats, and the addition of a café, children's play area, and an underground car park. However, there are numerous inaccuracies and confused descriptions regarding locations and spatial relationships, particularly in the detailed body paragraphs (e.g., misinterpreting the positions of various rose gardens and seating arrangements). While an overview is provided, the lack of precision and awkward phrasing prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the past and current layouts. However, progression is frequently hindered by clumsy transitions and repetitive mechanical cohesive devices. Referencing is often unclear, with pronouns and spatial markers like 'there is' and 'whereas' misused, creating confusion for the reader. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences is weak, leading to choppy and disjointed reading overall.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'park', 'rose garden', 'seats', and 'entrance'. There are numerous word formation and lexical errors throughout the text, such as 'substract' instead of 'subtract', 'classhouse' for 'glasshouse', and 'nowtrans formed'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but they are generally inaccurate or inappropriately collocated. These persistent lexical errors and spelling mistakes noticeably impede smooth communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, heavily relying on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. Grammatical errors are pervasive throughout the text, including missing articles (e.g., 'demonstrate transformation of public park'), subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'features has remained'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward prepositional phrases. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the precise meaning of many sentences.
