The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The plans illustrate the changes that have been made to Grange Park between 1920 and the present day.
Overall, the park has undergone significant redevelopment. Several original features, including the stage, fountain, pond and glasshouse, have been removed, while new facilities such as a café, children's play area, amphitheatre and underground car park have been introduced. The rose gardens and some seating areas, however, have remained.
In 1920, Grange Park had entrances on both Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street. A stage for musicians was located in the north-western part of the park, while a fountain stood near the centre. There were three rose gardens: two in the northern corners and one in the south-western corner. A pond for water plants occupied the north-eastern corner, and a glasshouse was situated in the south-east. Seats were positioned around the edges of the park.
Today, the stage has been replaced by an amphitheatre for concerts in the west, and the central fountain has been removed. The three rose gardens have been reduced to two: one remains in the north-west corner, while another is now located in the centre and is surrounded by seats. The former pond has also disappeared and has been replaced by a water feature in the south-east. In addition, a café and children's play area have been built in the northern part of the park. Finally, an underground car park has been added beneath the south-eastern area, with a new entrance from Eldon Street.
