Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully addresses the prompt by summarising the main features of Grange Park in 1920 and at present, making relevant comparisons. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, noting major changes and continuities, such as the introduction of the amphitheatre and the retention of certain features. Key details from the visual data are captured, including the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden, the addition of a café, children's play area, and water feature, and the preservation of entrances and certain rose gardens. However, the summary stops abruptly before fully completing the description of the modern layout, and there are minor descriptive inaccuracies (e.g., stating the park was 'completely constructed except for the two entrance and rose garden'). Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, a description of the 1920 layout, and a description of the present layout. There is a clear overall progression from past to present. However, cohesive devices and transitions are occasionally faulty or awkward, as seen in phrases like 'frrom music and fountain to more diversified, incorporating amphitheatre' and 'While water feature was constructed iin the south east and opposite children play area and cafe were build'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate time periods, but referencing and sentence linking inside the paragraphs can be mechanical and unclear at times. This warrants a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing topic-specific terms such as 'layout', 'fountain', 'amphitheatre', 'rose garden', and 'glasshouse'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the response, such as 'grange park' (capitalisation), 'frrom', 'musicans', 'noth western', 'noth easten', 'nest', and 'build' instead of 'built'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect hesitation and inaccuracy when attempting less common vocabulary or standard collocations, aligning with Band 5.5 or a solid Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The diagram illustrates the layout of... and how the same park looks at present' and 'In 1920, the park had a fountain in the centre, and to the west of that was a stage for musicans.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak due to frequent errors, including missing articles ('was undergone substantial transformation', 'stage frrom music', 'opposite children play area'), incorrect passive/active voice constructions ('the park was completely constructed', 'cafe were build'), and prepositional errors ('in the noth western side'). These errors sometimes cause minor strain for the reader, placing this performance at Band 5.5.
