Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count of 150 words, finishing prematurely at 131 words with an incomplete final sentence. Despite this length penalty, the student attempts to summarise the main features of Grange Park in 1920 and today, noting significant changes such as the replacement of the central fountain with a rose garden and the addition of an amphitheatre and café. However, the description is somewhat fragmented due to the abrupt ending, and certain details lack precision, such as mixing up the positions of specific features. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must ensure the task is fully completed with a robust overview and sufficient word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic logical structure, attempting to contrast the past and present layouts using sequencing phrases like 'In biggning' and 'now a days'. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped and the text breaks off mid-sentence, preventing a cohesive conclusion. Reference words and cohesive devices are used rather mechanically, and the overall progression is disrupted by sentence fragments and spelling errors. For better cohesion, the student should organize ideas into distinct paragraphs comparing specific zones of the park and ensure smooth transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'biggning' for beginning, 'Grang Park' for Grange Park, and 'establishd' for established. While the student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to park features (e.g., 'fountain', 'rose garden', 'amphitheatre', 'glasshouse'), the overall lexical range is limited and frequently imprecise. To improve, the student should expand their range of descriptive vocabulary and check spelling carefully before finalizing the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay features a mix of simple and attempting complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is quite low. There are frequent errors in preposition usage ('in center of park', 'on right corner'), missing articles ('were a glasshouse'), and incorrect verb forms ('rose garden is establishd'). Furthermore, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly with a dangling conjunction ('while Amphiteatre for'). These persistent errors and structural failures noticeably impede communication and pull the score down into the lower band.
