IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map demonstrates a public park known as "Grange Park" at the present time and when it first launched in 1920.
Overall, it is clearly visible that there are many improvement that took place in grange park. The fountain and pond are replaced, whereas seats are re-arranged around the rose garden, which was fountain before.
It is evident that, the stage for musicians which was in the west side has been refurbished into Amphitheatre for concerts with wider seating. Initially, there were three rose gardens in total, however reduced to two gardens, with one centred in the park, and other at top right has changed into cafe. The seats, which were at the borders of park, now surrrounded the rose garden.
On the other hand, pond that contains water plants and which was on the top right corner of the park, was converted into children's play area. At the bottom east side, where there was glasshouse, now changed into water feature. In addition to this, seperate entrance for car park has been constructed to the south right corner of the park.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear comparison of Grange Park between 1920 and the present day. Key features such as the removal of the fountain, the conversion of the stage into an amphitheatre, and changes to the rose gardens and pond are accurately identified and reported. A clear overview is included in the second paragraph, outlining the general transformations. However, there are minor inaccuracies in spatial details, such as stating the seats now surround the rose garden in the centre when they form a perimeter around that specific feature, and minor grammatical issues in the overview. Overall, the response is well-grounded in the visual data and fulfills the requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0, best aligning with Band 6.5 due to slight developmental and mechanical reporting gaps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The student effectively uses sequencing and transitional markers such as 'Overall', 'It is evident that', 'Initially', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition to this' to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately, separating the introduction, overview, and specific spatial comparisons into distinct sections. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical, preventing the text from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structural progression is clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'refurbished', 'amphitheatre', 'glasshouse', and 'water feature'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, though occasional word-choice and phrasing errors occur, such as 'improvement' instead of 'improvements' and 'south right corner' instead of 'southeast corner'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary use is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly without impeding the reader, placing the response securely in Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and passive structures (e.g., 'which was on the top right corner', 'has been constructed'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in grange park', 'into Amphitheatre'), pluralisation errors ('many improvement'), and awkward phrasing ('which was fountain before'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur with some frequency and prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 6.5. Control of simple structures is good, but complex structures show intermittent inaccuracy.
