Student answer (Band 4.0)
The plans below a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Firstly, I am talking about the grange park 1920. So, the around avenue have seats, rose garden, again seats. These are the around avenue entrance; rose garden, pond for water plants, seats, glasshouse. On the other hand, these are the eldon street entrance; fountain, stage for musicians, seats, again rose garden, and again seats. So, this is the grange park 1920.
Now, I am talking about the grange park today. So, the rose garden. The main entrance around avenue is; cafe, children's play area, then, four seats around between in rose garden, water features, after that, the entrance underground car park. The exit entrance is eldon street; is amphitheatre for concerts. So, this is the grange park today.
So, I think the grange park 1920 and grange park today have many difference. Like; glasshouse, childrens play area, water features amphitheatre for concerts, entrance underground car park, pond for water plants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response attempts to describe the changes shown in the plans of Grange Park between 1920 and today. However, it fails to meet the basic requirements of an Academic Task 1 response. Instead of providing an objective summary and selecting main features or making relevant comparisons, the writer includes conversational commentary ('Firstly, I am talking about...', 'So, I think...'). Furthermore, the description of the layout is extremely disjointed, listing isolated elements without a clear spatial overview or logical progression. Important changes, such as the replacement of the central fountain with a rose garden and the addition of the amphitheatre and underground car park, are mentioned in a fragmented manner rather than being properly integrated into a comparative analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organization of the text is poor and lacks a clear, logical progression. The student divides the response into brief paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is highly confused, consisting largely of disconnected lists of features rather than coherent sentences. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the constant use of 'So' and 'again'. Paragraphing is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response, as the introduction and overview are conflated with conversational filler, and there is no overarching structure guiding the reader through the comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily relies on copying terms directly from the prompt and the visual labels (e.g., 'rose garden', 'seats', 'glasshouse', 'amphitheatre for concerts'). There is a lack of flexibility and range, and the student struggles to use functional academic vocabulary to describe spatial changes or trends. Word choice is frequently awkward or incorrect due to the conversational tone ('I am talking about', 'exit entrance'). Spelling is generally acceptable because most terms are copied from the provided text, but lexical control is minimal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is severely limited. The response consists mostly of fragmented phrases, verbless sentences, and simple structures (e.g., 'So, the around avenue have seats, rose garden, again seats.'). There are frequent errors in basic sentence construction, prepositions ('around avenue' instead of 'along Arnold Avenue'), and word forms. Complex structures are entirely absent, and grammatical inaccuracies impede communication throughout the text, making it difficult to follow the intended spatial descriptions.
