Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by comparing Grange Park in 1920 with its layout today. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting general renovations like the replacement of the stage and fountain. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and spatial misreadings regarding the map data. For example, the student states that the glasshouse was on the 'left side of Eldon street entrance', whereas it was on the eastern side, and misidentifies the locations of the water feature and cafe. Furthermore, the description is somewhat disjointed and fails to comprehensively cover all major structural transformations clearly, leading to an under-developed overview of the overall changes. This performance aligns best with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into three paragraphs, providing a basic structural arrangement. However, logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing and weak transitional links. The student uses basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'Moreover', but these are often mechanically applied or used incorrectly to contrast spatial features rather than arguments. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun use ('it lead to fountain'). The overall organization lacks a smooth flow, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a map, such as 'renovation', 'amphitheatre', and 'feature'. However, there are frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'renovation done' instead of 'renovations made', 'children play are' (play area), and 'water feature is place' (placed). Spelling and morphological errors ('streets' instead of 'street', 'replace' instead of 'was replaced') are noticeable and occasionally cause strain for the reader, placing this response at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex constructions. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout, including missing auxiliary verbs ('renovation done', 'fountain replaced with'), incorrect prepositions ('on both sides', 'on the left side'), and subject-verb agreement issues. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate commas or periods. These recurring errors frequently impede clarity, resulting in a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
