IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The maps illustrates the changes of Grange park from its original layout in 1920 to is current state today.

Overall, the park has undergone significant modernization and redevelopment. While the two primary entrances have remained in their original positions, most of the original features have been replaced or upgraded to include more modern leisure facilities and consolidated seating.

In 1920, the center of the park was dominated by a central fountain, but this has since been replaced by a large rose garden completely encircled by seats. To the west, the original stage for musicians has been expanded and converted into a larger amphitheatre for concerts. Consequently, the surrounding seats along the western perimeter and the original rose garden in the southwest corner have been removed, leaving only the northwest rose garden intact.

On the eastern side of the park, major changes have taken place. The pond for water plants in the northeast corner has been replaced by a children's play area, while the adjacent rose garden was demolished to make way for a café. Furthermore, the glasshouse in the southeast corner has been substituted with a new water feature. Finally, an entrance to a new underground car park has been added adjacent to the southern gate on Eldon Street.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear and thorough comparison of Grange Park between 1920 and the present day. The response successfully identifies the main features, such as the transformation of the central fountain into a rose garden, the expansion of the stage into an amphitheatre, and the addition of modern facilities like the café and underground car park. An effective overall summary is included in the second paragraph, highlighting the general modernization and redevelopment of the park. All reported details are accurate and properly grounded in the provided visual data, fulfilling all requirements of the task achievement descriptor for a high band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response is logically sequenced, presenting information in a clear and structured manner. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a logical flow from an introduction and overall summary to specific details about the western and eastern sides of the park. Cohesive devices are managed well without feeling mechanical, using transition phrases such as 'while the two primary entrances', 'consequently', and 'furthermore' to connect ideas smoothly. Referencing is clear throughout, ensuring the reader can easily follow the spatial transformations of the park.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a wide and flexible vocabulary range suited to describing spatial changes and urban redevelopment. Appropriate less common lexical items and collocations are used effectively, such as 'undergone significant modernization and redevelopment', 'perimeter', 'demolished', and 'substituted'. Word choice is generally precise, with only a minor slip in the opening sentence ('maps illustrates' instead of 'map illustrates' or 'maps illustrate'). Overall, the lexical resource is strong and supports clear, fluent communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The writer uses a wide variety of complex sentence structures with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, featuring well-controlled subordinate clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'leaving only the northwest rose garden intact', 'surrounded on all four sides by seats'). Grammar and punctuation are handled with good control, and the minor subject-verb agreement slip in the very first sentence ('The maps illustrates') is an isolated occurrence that does not impede communication in any way.
