IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans illustrate how grange park is today compared to when it was commissioned in 1920.
Overall, the park went from a traditional setting to a modern and conventional structure with the inclusion of children's play area and amphitheatre. It is notable that while some structures like the entrances and the rose garden remained where they were, others were replaced.
In 1920, both arnold avenue and eldon street led to the park through the north and south respectively. These entrances led to the fountain, which was found at
the centre of the park demarcating it into two sides. In the northeast lies a rose garden and a pond for water plants, followed by seats in the east where people can engage in chats while receiving fresh air. Just very close to the entrance at the eldon street was a glasshouse which was located southeast. On the other side, were seats carefully dispersed to the north, northwest and the south of the play arena. There were rose gardens at the northwest and southwest of the park and also, a stage for musicians in the middlewest just beside the fountain.
In the present time, a lot of changes took place to make the park more recreational. Just like in 1920, the grange park have entrances at both Arnold avenue and Eldon street. In contrast to when it was opened, the fountain has been replaced with a rose garden with seats surrounding it by its four sides. The structures at the northeast were displaced by a cafe and children's play area while those at the east and southeast have been supplanted with a water feature. An underground car park was built outside the park, just opposite the water feature creating another entrance into the fun arena. While rose garden at the northeast remained unchanged the stage for musicians was substituted with an amphitheatre for concerts, to help to audience engage better.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of Grange Park in 1920 and comparing them with the present layout. An adequate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the transition from a traditional to a more recreational and modern structure. Key details such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden, the introduction of a children's play area, a café, an amphitheatre, and an underground car park are correctly identified and contrasted with the original features like the pond for water plants and the glasshouse. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in directional details, such as stating that the rose garden remained unchanged in the northeast (whereas the northwest rose garden remained and the northeast featured a pond), but these do not detract from a clear and comprehensive overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is appropriately divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, a detailed body paragraph describing the 1920 layout, and a final body paragraph outlining current changes. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'In 1920', 'In the present time', and 'In contrast to when it was opened'. Paragraphing is logical, and referencing between sentences is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions occur. Overall, the flow is smooth and guides the reader effectively through the map comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Less common vocabulary items are attempted, such as 'commissioned', 'demarcating', 'displaced', 'supplanted', and 'recreational'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as 'fun arena' instead of 'recreational area' or 'park', and occasional capitalization errors with proper nouns like 'grange park'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise comparisons and descriptions without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
A good mix of simple and complex sentence forms is utilised throughout the response, including relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'The plans illustrate how grange park is today compared to when it was commissioned in 1920'). There is good control of past and present tenses to contrast the two time periods. While there are some minor grammatical slips and punctuation lapses—such as missing capitalization on 'grange park', 'arnold avenue', and 'eldon street', and a tense inconsistency like 'the grange park have entrances'—the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and do not impede communication.
